Wrestling season is soon, and Director Jerry Lynch is anticipating a great year. As recruitment begins, let’s take a look at how the team is forming together.
Lynch showed a lot of optimism in the upcoming season, explaining how he expected their performance last year to grow even better this year. “Last year…the girls worked their way from not knowing anything to fourth in the state,†he stated, “…we’re expecting a much higher placement in states this year.â€
The season starts on the 10th, and Lynch expresses concerns about a shortened period to practice and train before break and then their first competition. He explains that “…for new kids, it’s going to be kind of fast and furious…but we don’t know what the numbers are going to be like yet.†With optimism, he states, “…we had a massive showing from girls last year. We’re hoping for the same thing.†He adds on that football players and other sports from the fall season often join in as well. For anybody looking to join: conditioning is happening this week, and tryouts are the 10th!
They also have the Virginia Duals to look forward to- a yearly tournament hosted at the Hampton Coliseum, to be held January of next year, where colleges and high schools from all over the countries attend. It’s their first time being invited to the prestigious tournament in about a decade, and the team will have to train even harder. “I don’t know how strong a showing we’ll have there, but the fact that we’re involved is only going to make us a better team,†Lynch nods.

Despite worries about lessened practice time, Lynch states his confidence in the team; “We’re expecting to be more successful than last year, and we’re just going to keep building off of that,†Not only is this confidence visible, but their team bond is also evident as well: enthusiastic shouts and friendly tackling are plenty in their practice. The members seem close, and laughter is prominent. There’s plenty of potential this season- and hopefully that carries on to the tournaments.
