Many people say that cross country is not for the faint of heart, and this has been proven true time and time again, especially by the wicked fast times our Eagles have had this season. On Wednesday, October 29, the Jamestown Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country Teams competed in the VHSL Region 4A Championships at Windsor Castle Park in Smithfield, Virginia. Although all the schools performed very well, the Eagles pulled ahead of the region, with the boys winning the championships and the girls coming in as runners-up. Making significant contributions to the boys’ team, our own Jonathan Grimm finished as the Region 5 Class A Champion with a time of 15:20, a full 44 seconds ahead of the second-fastest runner.Â
Cross country is a sport that requires both endurance and intensity that must be kept up at all times. Michael Zelwak, an author for MileSplit, states that cross country is a unique sport, as it requires distance runners to travel over different terrains as quickly as possible while also supporting their team. Although not as commonly recognized as many other sports, cross country provides its own unique challenges and portrayals of the athletic ability of people throughout the world.
Coming up soon, the Eagles will have the chance to compete in the VHSL 4A State Meet on the Oatlands Plantation Course in Leesburg, Virginia. Good luck running Eagles, and congratulations on your many accomplishments in the season so far!
